Sharing Independent Writing

The children share their learning with one another. The children are writing similes and reading them to one another.

Jade takes the floor, Hohepa and Sonny are wonderful listeners. And they give wonderful feedback.

Shay reads to Vaughan, who is a really enthusiastic listener.

Googling an Image

The children at Paihia school are learning in an e-learning environment. They are practicing reading, writing and numeracy skills, with the help of digital tools, such as iPads.

Next year the Year 3 children will move onto Chromebooks! In our class some children know how to Google an Image. This is quite tricky to learn, but once mastered, it is pretty simple.

Today we made sure that everyone can accomplish this skill. Here is a slide with our hard work. Ka Pai Ruma Toru.

Fruit Salad

It is important for all of us to have healthy relationships. In this activity the children develop the following skills:

- Communication
- Listening
- Supporting

Angela, Breeze and Ataahua crack up! They are thoroughly enjoying participating in this activity.

Target Shooting Math

The children in room 3 enjoyed practicing counting in 10s. We decided that we could make this a little more fun, using a target. The children were split into teams and took shots to see who could get the closest to the 40.

The children watch on intently as Karanga takes aim.

We used a tally system. Each tally mark represented 10 points.

Dialogue in our Writing

In Room 3 we are learning about including dialogue in our stories. At the moment we are learning about how to write narratives.

First, we talk about what speech is. We talk about the synonyms of speech.

Talking, Speaking, Chatting.

Drawing diagrams and making plans helps us to visualise our learning.

We think about different words for said... they are actually quite a few.

Vaughan is the scribe for his group! Great job Vaughan.

Mark works hard with the support of Ataahua and Jade. Well done Team!

Make Day: Make Your own Character

Today in Room 3 the Tamariki created their own characters . We have been learning about narratives and more specifically:

What is an adjective? A describing word!

Adjective + Noun

The teacher decided that the best way for us to learn to describe something is if we make it ourselves.

Kaitlin plans out her character.

Hohepa doesn't need any glue to put his character together.

Jade uses the glue gun to attach the eyes to her macadamia nut head.

Ash excitedly shows the teacher Mark's little character.

Shared Writing

Today in Room 3 we are practicing using adjectives in a sentence. Yesterday we talked about what an adjective is and how we might use it in our writing. We tried adding them into our narrative stories.

Today we are writing with our writing partners. The children are describing a picture we drew and putting these into a document together.

Resetting the Scene

The children in Room 3 had a ten minute opportunity to re-set their scenes they created last Thursday.

Some of them were knocked, some needed some more scenery. The children are excited to create their own little worlds.

Maya and Tahuri pour over the materials and resources. They meticulously select items. They talk to one another about what they like and don't like. They negotiate. Sometimes things work out their way, sometimes they need to let their friends make the decision.

An archway is added to Breeze and Karanga's original instillation. The children are learning about how to add adjectives to their writing. They spend time talking about exciting words that describe their creations.

The children came up with some interesting and exciting vocabulary.

Cross Country + Maths = ???

In Room 3 we are working hard to practice for cross country. today we were thinking about how Maths and Cross Country are related to one another.

Last week we discovered that distance is measured in centemetres and in meters, we measured using a ruler.

Today we figured out the time is measured in minutes and seconds, we measured using a clock or a stop watch.

It was wonderful to see the children actively learning and participating - while learning.

Great Work Room 3!

In Room 3 we warm-up, "Gangnam Style."

Archie and Sonny are the only 6 year old boys at school today!! They are both super serious contenders.

The seven year old boys get ready to practice their 3 laps.

The Room 3 Time Keepers wait nervously to time the children. They are excited to use the technology!

The teacher tally's our first attempt. She records the MINUTES and the SECONDS ____ : _____ . In Room 3 we are working on trying our best. When we complete TIME 2 next week, we are hoping to go a little faster. That means our time will be 'Smaller'.

What are the Ingrediants for a great friendship (relationsihp)?

Today we participated in some team-building activities. before we got started we reflected about last weeks learning.

What happened when you gave your gift, to someone you value?

They said:
-Thank you
-It's awesome
-I love it
-You're amazing

We talked about how we too could give some amazing compliments, to make sure we are showing special people in our lives that we value them.

The tamariki were so excited to participate in the blindfolded activity.

Zara was elected as the leader of her team. She called to her blindfolded sheep and lead them into the pen.

Kaitlin perservered to tend to her flock. It was until always easy, but she kept calm and guided them to safety. Kia Kaha Kaitlin!

Ash was cool, calm and collected leading his sheep towards his voice.

The children in Room 3 figured out that we needed the following skills in order to have a positive or GOOD outcome:

The Ingredients for a great friendship are:

  1. Communication: Koreromai
  2. Listening: Whakarongomai
  3. Enthusiasm: Help us with a translation please!
  4. Supportive; Manaakitanga
They were just amazing! As a class we are learning to see and recognise celebrations and challenges. Please ask us about both at home. We are learning to be balanced thinkers.
