Maara Kai

This week we have been learning about  maara kai or no dig food gardens. We watched a short documentary in class which taught us about the different natural materials we can use and how we should layer them.

Karanga and Kaitlin do some extra research to check if their work is correct.

The children meticulously layer their gardens.

Zara and Sammy label their work.

Hohepa explains where the labels will go.

  1. Kia ora Room 3. How interesting. I had not heard of maara kai before. You are so lucky to learn such things. I love growing vegetables. I have a big vegetable garden, compost and worm farms at home. Are you going to make your won garden at school?

  2. Kia ora Mrs Lindsay,

Some of us already knew about a maara kai. Hohepa has one at home and he composts too!
We are thinking about making a vegetable garden. And maybe we could make a maara kai, but we would have to make the layers and start a new garden. It would be really hard work.
Thank you for your post. Do you have any photos of your garden Mrs Lindsay? We would really like to see them.
